What are Dentures?
They are custom-made prosthetic or artificial teeth and gums that replace lost or removed natural teeth, and also provide support to the cheeks and lips. They are worn by patients who have lost their natural teeth through injury, illness, or oral health issues such as extreme gum disease. They are often recommended when there are not enough healthy teeth left for other dental procedures. In such cases, remaining teeth are removed, and a full set is provided. There are different types of dentures created to address a variety of dentist issues. They may be partial or full, and they may be removable or fixed (implant supported).
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures replace multiple missing teeth, when one or more natural teeth still remain in the upper or lower jaw. Partial dentures are similar to a bridge but are removable. They secure to adjacent natural teeth via a light, durable framework. The loss of teeth can often lead to the remaining teeth shifting to fill in the gaps, which can lead to an altered bite and a crooked smile. Partial dentures can help avoid this. Partial dentures may be used when nearby teeth are not strong enough to hold a bridge, or when more than just a few teeth are missing.
Complete Dentures
Complete dentures replace all teeth in the mouth. They are often referred to as false teeth. Any remaining teeth in the mouth are first removed, and then once the tissue has completely healed (times can vary anywhere from a few weeks to a few months), a full set of custom-made dentures is placed. Complete dentures are removable and are held in place by suction.
