What is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a procedure that can save an infected tooth from extraction, when it becomes diseased or is dying. An infection can result from a deep cavity, a fracture or crack, or an injury to the tooth that exposes the root to bacteria. A root canal can fix the issue at hand without removing the tooth. If left untreated, bacteria can reach the extremely sensitive and vulnerable innermost tissue of the tooth (the pulp), causing extreme pain. A dental abscess or possible tooth loss is also possible. With a root canal, a hole is created in the affected tooth so that the damaged pulp can be removed. Once removed, the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, and then the area is filled with a rubber-like material in order to strengthen and protect it. A crown is highly recommended to prevent a future fracture or wear of the treated tooth.
